A.Pengertian

Passive voice adalah suatu bentuk kalimat dimana subjek kalimat menerima aksi, bukan melakukan aksi. Tidak seperti active voice yang fokus terhadap pihak yang melakukan aksi (doer of action), bentuk ini lebih berfokus kepada pihak atau objek yang menerima hasil dari suatu aksi tersebut (receiver of action).

B.Rumus Teks.

Umumnya, kalimat aktif yang bisa ditransformasi menjadi kalimat pasif berbentuk kalimat aktif yang mengandung transitive verbs (kata kerja yang memerlukan objek langsung) seperti make, bring, buy, write dan sebagainya. Sebaliknya, kalimat pasif yang mengandung intransitive verbs (kata kerja yang tidak memerlukan objek langsung) seperti cry, swim, go, arrive, dan die tidak bisa diubah menjadi kalimat pasif.

Namun, apabila intransitive verbs tersebut diikuti oleh preposition, ada kemungkinan kalimat tersebut bisa diubah menjadi kalimat pasif tetapi kalimat pasif yang terbentuk akan sangat kaku.

C.Contoh Voice Passive

a) Ketika pelaku aksi (doer of action) tidak diketahui	My money has been stolen. Dalam contoh passive voice ini, pembicara tidak mengetahui siapa yang mencuri dompetnya.
b) Ketika pelaku aksi (doer of action) sudah jelas dan tidak perlu disebutkan	Wheat is grown in Karawang. Dalam contoh ini, sudah sangat jelas bahwa petani adalah pelaku aksi atau orang yang menanam gandum.
c) Ketika tidak ingin memberitahukan siapa pelaku aksi (doer of action)	Mistakes were made. Dalam contoh ini, pembicara tidak mau memberitahu siapa yang melakukan kesalahan.
d) Ketika pelaku aksi (doer of action) adalah semua orang (people in general)	Transjakarta is used as an alternative means of transportation to avoid traffic jam. Dalam contoh ini, pelaku aksi adalah semua orang karena transjakarta dapat digunakan oleh masyarakat luas.
e) Ketika pelaku aksi telah disebutkan pada kalimat sebelumnya (apabila terdapat di satu paragraf)	Mr. Han caught Ari cheating on the test. Ari was given punishment immediately. Dalam contoh passive voice ini, Mr. Han sebagai pelaku aksi sudah disebutkan sebelumnya sehingga tidak perlu ditambahkan pada kalimat kedua.

D. Arrange into Question in passive voice!

   Correct is: Were the thieves caught?
2. written – in – the – language – lab – the – tests – are – always?
   Correct is: Are the tests always written in the language lab?
3. accepted – will – be – my – apology?
   Correct is: Will my apology be accepted?
4. found – are – in – Alaska – eagles?
   Correct is: Are eagles found in Alaska?
5. for – the – World – Exhibition – in – 1889 – the – Eiffel – Tower – was – built?
   Correct is: Was the Eiffel Tower built for the World Exhibition in 1889?
6. the – workers – will – by – computers – replaced – be?
   Correct is: Will the workers be replaced by computers?
7. be – can – cooked – beans – and – carrots – together?
   Correct is: Can beans and carrots be cooked together?
8. the – accident – was – by – the – police – seen – yesterday?
   Correct is: Was the accident seen by the police yesterday?
9. opened – where – was – the – first – underground – railway?
   Correct is: Where was the first underground railway opened?
10. the – books – are – going – to – be – returned – to – the – school?
    Correct is: Are the books going to be returned to the school?
11. are – cars – in – Hong – Kong – made?
    Correct is: Are cars made in Hong Kong?
12. been – the – has – to – hospital – she – taken?
    Correct is: Has she been taken to the hospital?
13. can – in – five – minutes – the – potatoes – roasted – be?
    Correct is: Can the potatoes be roasted in five minutes?
14. for – the – exam – be – will – prepared – the – students?
    Correct is: Will the students be prepared for the exam?
15. when – be – served – tea – will?
    Correct is: When will tea be served?
16. is – lunch – today – provided – being?
    Correct is: Is lunch being provided today?
17. last – week – given – were – laptops – to – them?
    Correct is: Were laptops given to them last week?
18. broadcasted – the – videos – may – be?
    Correct is: May the videos be broadcasted?
19. for – repairs – been – closed – the – road – has?
    Correct is: Has the road been closed for repairs?
20. was – by – the – teacher – asked – yesterday – he?
    Correct is: Was he asked by the teacher yesterday?
